Deep Earth

With composer Matthew Burtner, and the NOBROW.collective

burtner

Matthew Burtner is an Alaskan-born composer, sound artist and technologist specializing in concert chamber music and interactive new media. His work explores ecoacoustics, embodiment, and extended polymetric and noise-based systems. He currently is an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Virginia. DEEP EARTH music uses “Ecoacoustics,” a process to embed environmental systems into musical and performance structures using new technologies.

“Deep Earth” also incorporates “mined” film images, culled from a large collection of old educational films collected by the Athens Center for Film and Video. The performance is multi-media and interdisciplinary, immersed in video and music—both of which are heavily intertwined with sophisticated and cutting edge computer technologies.

See and hear what happens when seven full sets of fine bone porcelain tableware are dropped from a 20 ft. high set of scaffolding onto a dining room table, shatter into millions of pieces and are then meticulously pieced back together through vigorous sound and video editing. Followed by a performance of Kinetic Attractions a percussion work inspired by the images and sounds of Dinner Music by composer Matthew Schreibeis.
