Edward Lachman has collaborated with filmmakers such as The Maysles brothers, Robert Altman, Wim Wenders, Todd Haynes, Ulrich Seidl, Steven Soderbergh, Sofia Coppola, Shirley Clarke, and Paul Schrader. Selected credits as cinematographer include “Desperately Seeking Susan,” “Tokyo-Ga,” “Light Sleeper” (Independent Spirit Award) “La Soufriére,” “The Limey,” “The Virigin Suicides,” “Erin Brokovich,” “Far From Heaven” (Academy Award nomination, Independent Spirit Award, and Silver Frog, Camerimage), Ulrich Seidl’s “Paradies” trilogy, “I’m Not There” (Bronze Frog, Camerimage), “Mildred Pierce,” “Wiener-Dog,” and “Carol” (Academy Award nomination, Independent Spirit Award, Golden Frog, Camerimage). In 2015 Lachman became the first American to win the prestigious German Marburger Camera Prize.

The Film House Award

A new initiative at the AIFVF has led to the creation of The Film House Award. This year’s Film House Award is given in honor of Ohio University Alumni Edward Lachman to a visionary filmmaker showing in our official competition. The 2016 Film House Award is sponsored by ARRI camera and consists of a free two week rental of a professional Amira Camera Package. The AIFVF thanks Ed Lachman and ARRI for their support of this year’s Film House Award.

Then one night she surprises her husband Frank kissing another man, and her tidy world starts spinning out of control. In her confusion and grief, she finds consolation in the friendship of their African-American gardener, Raymond – a socially taboo relationship that leads to the further disintegration of life as she knew it. Despite Cathy and Frank’s struggle to keep their marriage afloat, the reality of his homosexuality and her feelings for Raymond open a painful, if more honest, chapter in their lives.

In an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s seminal novel The Price of Salt, CAROL follows two women from very different backgrounds who find themselves in an unexpected love affair in 1950s New York. As conventional norms of the time challenge their undeniable attraction, an honest story emerges to reveal the resilience of the heart in the face of change. A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage.
