Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin – In-Person – 2023

Thursday, April 13, 7:15 PM

Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin’s work has been largely focused on the fluid nature of identity, and the changing meaning of community and subjectivity in the wake of the profound technological shifts of the last 20 years.

The Athens based duo creates single and multi-channel videos, large-scale installations, and densely layered soundscapes. Their “sculptural theaters”—installations built as containers for specific movies—incorporate architectural, audiovisual, and sculptural elements to expand on-screen content into environmental panoramas. Together, the cinematic, aural, and interactive components of Fitch and Trecartin’s sculptural theaters stretch the means by which narrative is conveyed, reflecting on the disjunction and sensorial saturation of contemporary reality.

Fitch and Trecartin have been working together since they met at Rhode Island
School of Design in 2000. Since then, their collaborative work has been included in exhibitions at major institutions around the world, including: the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, USA (2006); MoMA PS1, Long Island City, USA (2011); the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France (2011–12); the Venice Biennale, Italy (2013); KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin, Germany (2014–15), Astrup Fearnley Museet, Oslo, Norway (2018), Fondazione Prada, Milan, Italy (2019), and Den Frie, Copenhagen, Denmark (2022).

Fitch and Treacrtin will present a collection of shorts created in and around their work Whether Line, collaborations, music videos and new unpublished films all made here in Athens, Ohio.
